ALL of Gen Y is lazy?! WHAT?!

I just read THIS article and I almost cannot believe it. Talk about age discrimination! To me, it sounds like incompetent employers are hiring incompetent workers. And if that isn't the case, then it's incompetent employers who are hiring talented and youthful people who don't know how to harness this generation's creativity and energy.

Do your research! If you are a company who is hiring someone under 30, know what you're getting into. Of course they're going to talk to their friends. This is how Gen Y operates. We have connections EVERYWHERE. We network all the time. And if anyone worth a damn is employed in your care, they're probably doing it to better your company. If they aren't and are just chatting to their moms or hairdressers or something all day while filing their nails, sure, fire them, but check first.

Be smart about how you treat your employees. Gone are the days where you can ask your employees to be work horses with very little acknowledgment, development, or respect. We know we don't have to put up with that, and we will go elsewhere.

You know those stories about the really smart kids who would end up doing badly in school because they weren't being challenged enough? All it took was a harder class, a side project, or a bit more responsibility for them to get back in the game and rise to the top of the class? Well that's what Gen Y is. We're a bunch of over achievers who want the most rewards for the hardest work. If these employers are finding that MORE than 1 or 2 companies are having this problem, it might not be a matter of oversimplifying or generalizing a generation, it could very well be that you're just not asking how they can help you, or giving them enough work to keep them occupied. Or - just bad hiring practices.

Roll with the punches. If you don't hire the under 30 crowd, the under 30 crowd won't hire you. With all the technology out there you think that you're going to have customers once the social media world gets ahold of this? There are plenty of employers/companies out there that are dying for the skills we possess, and the money we have to throw around. Yes, even in this bad economy.

Am I in any way saying that Gen Y has every right to be lazy and just slide on through? No. But I can tell you, on the whole, anyone who's out there trying to work and get ahead is a valuable resource for any company. Are there bad apples? Sure.

"The chamber is hoping Gen Y will learn from this, that they can no longer take for granted the good times and will no longer get away with the luxuries they have been given."

The "chamber" is wrong. There is NO reason why we can't go to work, do work, do work well, and not enjoy ourselves. It almost sounds like a whole bunch of older folks are jealous that they can't figure out Social Media, and having it all. Don't punish us for how your generation raised us. Work with us and work towards a better working relationship. Sheesh.
