Why Should I Care About Twitter?

I just looked at the top trending topics on Twitter today... or at least at this particular moment, world wide. They are:

Trending: Worldwide

* #nowplaying (media choice of the moment).
* #uknowubrokewhen (symptoms that indicate a lack of cash flow)
* #childishwisdom (simple advice they recall from their childhood)
* Haiti (organize relief efforts or relay news)
* iPad (Apple tablet computer is getting a lot of buzz)
* Super Bowl (NFL Saints vs. Colts)
* Shorty AwardAwards (honoring the best producers of short, real-time content)
* World Cancer Day (Discussion)
* Zune HD (New device getting buzz))
* Toyota (Apple head finds trouble with car's internal computer)

And personally, most of that doesn't apply to me. SO - out of curiosity I changed the Trending World Wide topic to Trending New York City and these were the topics:

Trending: New York City

* #thenafightbrokeout * #uknowubrokewhenPeople * #deadwrong4that * iPad
* Drag Race * Vday * RuPaul * Jimmy Kimmel * Haiti * Belly

and again, not much of this strikes any interest in me, and I'm reminded of what I thought twitter was just a short 3 months ago: A complete waste of time.

What would anyone of any age, who is just starting in Twitter find of any value? I quickly became obsessed with it, and even still get overwhelmed with it at times, and like I said, hated it just a few short months ago.

The trick at first is to type in a few hashtag (#) searches and see what you can watch happen in a topic you find interesting. You can go to www.hashtag.org for a list of hashtag graphs and charts to show you what's popular... or just google "A list of Hashtags" and a whole bunch of stuff will come up such as a list of the funniest hashtags on a list for educators, anything really.

Then click on people's profiles to see what they've been posting and if you're interested in following them.

Once you've figured out who you want to follow - start interacting! It only grows from there. It may seem like some weird code what with all the @'s and the #'s but really, it's very simplistic in its nature and an incredible way to get news and do business. It will revolutionize how we do many things in the future - and you don't want to be left behind do you? Stay relevant.
